Remembering Leva Blowers

Leva Lloyd was born on October 28, 1931, at her family home in Lima, NY. During this time in history, Herbert Hoover was president, Thomas Edison died, the Star Spangled Banner became the national anthem, the last Ford Model A was built, and the Empire State Building was completed - all while Prohibition and the Great Depression dragged on. She was welcomed into life by parents, Ruth Franklin and George "Max" Lloyd. Ruth and Max met during their time at Syracuse University, where Max was a fencing athlete. They had three other children; Paul, Patricia "Pat", and Virginia "Ginny". Sadly, Leva lost both of her parents at a young age, with her father passing away when she was only 4. She spent much of her childhood caring for her mother, who suffered from severe arthritis and passed away when Leva was 16. At this point, Leva and her siblings moved into their grandmother's home. Shortly thereafter, their grandmother fell gravely ill and was hospitalized, leaving the Lloyd children to fend for themselves. Following that, Leva met her future husband, Lawrence "Larry" Blowers while attending Scottsville High School. When they eventually married, Larry became the legal guardian to little sisters Pat and Ginny.

After completing her education, Leva entered the workforce. Her organizational skills and resourcefulness took her far - being able to find any file, paper, or document in an instant. She was employed for many years at Lapp Insulator in LeRoy, where the Blowers family spent much of their time. When she and Larry relocated to Rochester, Leva took a position as purchasing agent for Pulsa Feeder, a pump manufacturer, and eventually retired from this post. In her free time, Leva was a loyal churchgoer. She was active in her Presbyterian congregation for as long as she was able and looked forward to visits from her church representative and hospice clergy right up until her final week at St. John's. Leva was also skilled at crocheting and knitting. She had great pride in making afghan blankets for each member of her family, taking great care to get the right color yarn and see each project through in detail from start to finish. These blankets were treasured by her family, who lovingly termed them "Gram's Blankets."

Leva's family was the most important part of her life. She was a wonderful mother to David, Steve, Diane, and Rick. The kids ranged 10 years in age difference, but despite all the hard work it takes to be a mom, Leva handled these responsibilities with strength and grace. There was no babysitter, no cleaning lady - she was the original "grinder." Together, Leva and the children accompanied Larry on a work trip to York, PA. Later, they ventured to Washington DC and Disneyworld. After the kids had grown up, Leva and Larry enjoyed visiting their nieces, Joy and Carol in Florida with Ginny and her husband, Lee. Leva was a perpetually kind and considerate presence in her family. She made sure to keep up to date with the details of everyone's lives, too - a new relationship, a change of career, a blanket in the color they like, a separate container of macaroni salad made with their favorite kind of mayonnaise. Leva possessed a unique talent for making each individual person feel loved in their own special way. She listened with a welcoming and understanding ear to any dilemma without passing judgement or offering unsolicited advice but shared great wisdom and insight when asked.

Leva took joy in the little things - a patty melt and ice cream from Bill Gray's, making her grandkids laugh, a margarita at Monte Alban, a glass of Manischewitz concord grape wine at 4PM daily, playing (usually winning) a lively game of gin with Kevin, pinochle with Steve and Amy, Chinese Checkers with Chrissy, and watching Lauren and Sarah compete on their high school volleyball teams. Leva loved listening to music, too. However, whether it was the sound of the Big Bands or the crooning of Sinatra, nothing could beat the music of her children and grandchildren. She and Larry would arrive 30 minutes early at any concert or sporting event to make sure they had the best seats in the house to appreciate their family's hard work. Leva extended her love and care to another type of family member, too. Millie was Leva's cat and close companion in the years following Larry's passing. Though Millie was eventually taken by leukemia, Leva cherished her memory and almost immediately hoped for another feline friend.

Many of the Blowers Family memories center on times at the dinner table with Leva. She was a gifted cook and had more than a few famous recipes. Leva even taught granddaughter Meghan how to make her outstanding apple pie. Her chicken and biscuits, potato salad, macaroni salad, sweet applesauce, cottage pudding (cake with chocolate sauce), and succulent strawberry jam were all perennial favorites of her kids and grandkids, alike. Even though she readily admitted that the strawberry jam recipe came directly from the Sure-Jell box, there was something inexplicably special about it. It wasn't just jam - it was Grandma's Jam - and it became a tradition spread to her family's households across the country. Leva's strawberry jam is emblematic of so many other beautiful things she passed down to her children and grandchildren. She is present in every tradition and family quirk; the games they play, the ways they talk, their senses of humor, the life lessons they carry, their work ethics, and the ways they support each other with loyalty and compassion.
