I worked with John as an umpire in the Kodak baseball league. He was a wonderful man who encouraged me and I will cherish his memory. He was one of the greats.

John and I were football teammates in the 1950's at East High School. During one of our games at Franklin Field, John picked up a fumbled football, and returned it for a touchdown. The East High cheerleaders, thinking that it was me who scored the TD, cheered my name. John and I have joked about that incident for many years, I will miss the affection and friendship that we shared together.

As a young Football Official one of my first Varsity games was with John as the Referee. In the locker room prior to the game John approached me, put his hands on my face and said "have a good game". Unbeknownst to me his hands had some type of cologne that must have cost $1.00 for 5 gallons, too late to wash it off, on to the field we went. Meeting the head coach for the teams each one looked at me and said " you must be the rookie". As I turned there was John with his trademark smile. Whenever I saw John after at soe event we always talked about it and laughed.

John and my paths have crossed many times over these many years. We met when he was a senior at East High and I a junior at Franklin.
We both found ourselves in the Navy and got together when both stationed in the Norfolk, VA area. Years later when my wife and I regularly vacationed in Chincoteague VA, I would send John pictures of the skating rink where John, the ever-industrious sailor, had a part time job.
I recall visiting John on his porch after hospitalization from his Navy accident in Newfoundland.
Years later, I was pleased I was able to offer assistance when Lucy faced her untimely illness.
The two of us would have breakfast or lunch together a few times per year and I will miss that and our bantering about our different, but very similar, Italian/Jewish upbringings.
It was only two years at this time of year that John was with us to share a Rosh Hashanah dinner.
Rest in peace our friend,
Arnie and Mary Jane Gissin

John’s smile illuminated a softball field. He was a kind, gentle man. I was always looking forward to a big hug from him. He would coach 3 rd base for our old lady league.
I’d be on 3rd and he would be telling me, if it’s caught in the outfield , you’re tagging Viv. I’m like John I’m not 21 any more. He goes you can make it. So I’d tell my knees let’s go. Off I want. He loved the game of softball. He loved watching his daughter Marge play and how proud he was of her. He was one of a kind and he truly will be missed. Until we meet again my friend . RIP.

Michelle, Katy, and family, although I only met your father a few times at the York High golf outings, he was someone you could not easily forget ! He had an infectious smile, zest for life, and outgoing personality! It’s tough losing a parent, even when grown yourself. Our hearts go out to you all.
❤️ Love,
Eileen and Mike Snyder

What a Guy! John made use of every minute he lived on this earth. If possible he would be there for anyone and everyone. He would ask if he needed something and was always there if you needed anything from him. I often wondered how many miles he but on his car in a year. Everyone involved with sports will remember the Chicken Wings and Beer sports meetings at his house......God Bless you John and get those officials in Heaven organized and ready to go.
