Honorable Edmund A. Calvaruso

April 17, 1944 - January 12, 2022

George Heuring February 3, 2022

Judge Calvaruso was a great jurist and an even better person. It is without exaggeration to say that without the privilege of knowing him, I would not be who I am today, as he was my mentor and my friend.

The world is a lesser place without him, but his impact continues through the countless lives he positively touched.

George Heuring February 3, 2022

Samuel A Simone January 16, 2022

Dear Joann and Family,
The last time had seen Ed was at the swearing in ceremony for Elena Cariola. I was passing by the table he was sitting at and he hollered "hay cugino" as I was passing, I spoke briefly with him that day and now wish I took more time to do so. We were second cousins and everyone I knew in the Italian community always spoke highly of him and what a great guy he was. I know he will be missed by all the people he knew. God Bless You All.

The Honorable Edmund A. Calvaruso. Honorable is a title bestowed on Ed as a Surrogate and Supreme Court Judge. But Ed was always honorable: in the way he thought and treated others, friends and strangers alike. We met at St. John Fisher College and formed a deep lasting friendship. Actually, it was much more than just a friendship. At Fisher we studied hard and partied hard: Roncone’s for an occasional lunch, regular games of euchre and pool and pitchers of Genny at the Hotel Stephany. We had nick names: Ed was Camel. I was Mac and Tommy Way was Monk. Ed was from Aquinas, I was from McQuaid; High School rivals in the field and court. They say that opposites attract. Everyone was attracted to Ed. Ed continued to hone his skills on the court (basketball that is) together with his teammates Bill Bodenweber and Tom Trevett, while I ran the Booster Club and was the Editor of Jo Roffs – the Fisher Year Book. Ed was a Young Republican; I was a Young Democrat. We both ran for elected office: Ed was President of the Student Board of Governors, I was Vice President of the Senior Class. And yes, we were founding members of the Royal Canadian Order of the Blue Goose. But don’t let that tarnish our subsequent reputations.
Ed’s parents “the Babe and the Hawk” (harmless nick names) drove us to Brooklyn, where we were roommates at St. John’s University. Ed studied for his law degree; I worked on my MBA. In our apartment on Joralemon Street we stacked Rheingold Cans to the ceiling and took turns cooking, Ed using his family’s recipes, spiced up with extra red hot sauce. As roommates we were like the Odd Couple: Felix and Oscar. You can guess who was which. Once again, we studied hard and played hard, celebrating both St. Patrick’s and Columbus Day, the Macy Thanksgiving Parade, Fourth of July and New Years at Time Square.
Ed was the best man in my wedding and subsequently the attorney for my divorce. But life goes on. Ed and I both later met and again married: amazing women, Joanne for Ed and Carol for me.
Ed went on dedicating his life to a distinguished career in the legal field. Serving as both Surrogate and Supreme Court Judge. Ed told me that one of the things he liked best about his role in Surrogate Court was bringing families together in guardianships and adoptions. Ed also Volunteered with the Knights of Columbus and other many organizations while I volunteered with Special Olympics.
Ed made friends wherever he went and with whoever met. Carrying on Ed’s legacy and family tradition recipes, you can order a Calvaruso at Mr. Dominic’s. Before it closed, the 2 Vine restaurant similarly had a menu item named in honor of Ed.
Ed has had a good life. He has truly made a real difference. I cannot imagine life without my wife and soulmate, Carol. And I cannot imagine the loss Joanne must feel. My heartfelt sympathy to Joanne and Ed’s family.
Ed will live on in my heart and soul. He truly was an honorable man.

Rest In Peace, Brother. It is fortunate that the AQ '62 classmates got together via Zoom in time for us to see and hear Ed last year. Of all the accomplished men in our class, Doctors, Professors, Counselors, good men all--It was Ed who went the farthest. Some of us chaired departments; he sat on the Bench as a Judge. Some of us are physicians who heal people, he streamlined the arcane court system at home and then statewide. I'll always remember Ed's positive outlook, whether in Latin or English class, or on the playing field. In the great beyond--where Ed now looks out for us all--if he pleads our case, we'll all get to heaven. Lillian and I were fortunate to spend time with Ed in person at our 45th reunion. How quickly the 60th has come. How swiftly life passes.

Joanne & family,

I always say Edmond was my cousin, but in reality he was my Uncle Tony’s cousin. My FAVORITE memory was staying at my Uncles apartment, going through the “secret door” to Aunt Babes apartment. He was always a sweet guy who played with me and my cousin Roseanne. We would slide down the stair banister at Aunt Babes and he would catch us. He was so patient then and patient throughout his life. Since he was young, he has been a wonderful, kind man!!! He will be truly missed! Bob and I both send our love and condolences to Joanne and their families.

Bernard Giliberti January 14, 2022

I was the Monroe County Sheriffs deputy that was assigned to Judge Calvaruso both in supreme and surrogate courts for over 10 years, In that time our relationship went from Judge and Deputy to trusted friends, he had a heart of gold and never turned anyone away who was in need of assistance, advice or a shoulder to learn on.
He honored a persons loyalty and honesty as did those who came to see him daily. I was extremely saddened at his passing, I know he will be dearly missed, I will miss our lunch’s and speaking with him, my sincere condolences and prayers to his wife Joanne and his entire family,,, RIP your honor you’re with God now!!

Olivia Ortega January 14, 2022

Ever since I was little he called me 007 because my initials are OO. He would always let me sit in his chair when he was out of his office (even after I pressed the emergency button and sent a bunch of officers in panic). He was family to mine for so many years and always showed love like I was one of his own. You will be truly missed. Love, 007
