Chapter 1 Of 86

My father was the son of Rosemarie and Mike, starting with humble beginnings as the family came here off the boat from Italy to Ellis Island. His siblings were Cataldo, Louis, & Rosette. They grew up on the west side of the city first on Jay St. then settled onto Saratoga Avenue with the entire family. Some of those humble beginnings were the importance of family and always taking care of family first.

My father had many jobs throughout his life starting as a newspaper boy delivering newspapers, doing some shoeshine work, joining the military in 1954 and serving his country proudly as an ammunition specialist during the Korean War. He owned suburban hair fashions where he not only took care of his clientele but developed and patented his hair teasing device US3421522a. Not bad for a guy who said he's only had an 8th-grade education. After suburban hair he started his career at Kodak. For these younger folks, we had cameras that used film and you had to wait to develop into actual pictures, can you imagine taking a selfie back then...

Well during those Kodak years is when I came into the picture.

I was just a kid and all I really knew is dad had to work to put food on the table. To say dad was a hardworking man was an understatement. Back in those days, you would get perfect attendance awards. Dad worked all kinds of hours ABC shifts and he even had a rental property on Cooper Road that he took care of. On weekends he and I would go cut the lawn and usually then follow up with a visit to Aunt Rosette's and Uncle Nick's or Aunt Julia's and Uncle Louie's. I always liked those visits, I either got some iced tea or I found out that I had quarters in my ears.

As time went on my dad made the scarifies to put me thru McQuaid Jesuit, and he began the process to completely rehab the Cooper Road house to get us out of the city. Dad had managed time to take night school courses in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry while at Kodak, this is where all that education and perfection all came together. He rewired the entire house, changed, and updated the plumbing, and even relocated a couple of doors and windows. But then it came to the drywall and the woodwork. You will never find a tape joint in that house all the walls were skim coated to perfection, he even went one step further and took every single piece of 40+-year-old painted wood trim and stripped it all down, stained and lacquer to a high gloss shine (and I have some of those pics on the slide show). I am so proud of all his hard work and sacrifices. On top of all this work, dad was doing, along with my mom, they raised me. Listen, raising a Magguilli is no simple feat. It wasn't always easy. Well, I didn't set a train on fire, but they made me the man I am today,
