Al was born in Rochester, NY on November 28, 1935. His birth story is legendary as it was Thanksgiving Day, and all the family were gathered and the women were cooking up a storm. His mother, Sarah wasn't expecting to give birth that day, but along came Al. He was fond of telling the story, "And out I came, right into the pot! And I've been in the shit ever since."

Al was the third son of Beresford and Sarah Mavity. The brothers were five years apart, first born was Herbert (Les), the second was Ron, and then Al. As the youngest, he shared many stories of being picked on and being the butt of the jokes, but he gave back as good as he got. The brothers banded together to watch over their cousin Betty and, as the story goes, had to each approve her choice of a husband - Jim Shoemaker. From the beginning, all he had to say was, "I'll have a beer." and he was in.

Al was a permanent fixture on the Monroe Avenue area, Malley's was a favorite hangout and he and his brothers all took turns as bartenders there in the1950s. Following in his brother's footsteps, who each joined the military before they turned 18, he entered the Navy in 1952 at the age of 17 and served as an Airman for four years on the USS Wright aircraft carrier.

After he was discharged, Al took several different jobs, including driving delivery vehicles, working at Seabreeze amusement park, and eventually took a job as a lineman with the Rochester Telephone Company. He married Helen in 1958 and had three children - Colleen, Chris and Marilee (Missy).

He worked for the Monroe County Sherriff's Department as a Correctional Officer from 1965 until his retirement in 1990, after 25 years of service.

Al and Helen divorced, but he found love again and enjoyed an 18 year loving relationship with Mary Lou. Together they enjoyed traveling to Florida and spending time with good friends at the Moose club - including their favorite Sunday morning "Moose Mass" crew along with Monsignor Jerry and Sister Carol.

Al was an avid Buffalo Bills fan, loved all things John Wayne, enjoyed country music and loved to dance. He was beloved by his family and always the center of laughs and good times.

After a short illness, Al's life ended quietly and peacefully at the Journey Home hospice on Long Pond Road, and enjoyed visits with many family and friends in his final days.
